Quick tip: Verifying foreign medical education

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is the only "designated equivalent source" The Joint Commission authorizes to provide primary source verification of a physician's credentials from a foreign medical school.

The ECFMG only allows verifications online and by mail. To conduct an online verification, logon to https://cvsonline2.ecfmg.org with the physician's

  • USMLE/ECFMG identification number,
  • Name, and
  • Date of birth.

The ECFMG typically mails a response within two weeks. Visit the ECFMG Web site for more information.
