Q&A: What criteria, beyond that required for accreditation, is appropriate to evaluate when credentialing a physician?

A: The processes for credentialing and privileging should be clearly outlined in the medical staff bylaws of the hospital. However, some hospitals take the requirements of The Joint Commission a step further.

For example, Hospital A may require an applicant to provide information about all malpractice suits, settlements, and judgments. Hospital B might require the same information, but only those suits, settlements, and judgments that have occurred in the last five years.

While both hospitals satisfy The Joint Commission's requirements for addressing professional liability, the specifics at each organization differ.
